Theme – Seek and Save

“The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:9).

Exponential 2014 will take a fresh look at evangelism — proclaiming the Good News — as we rethink and challenge some of our old paradigms and rediscover some of Jesus’ old truths. Within the context of discipleship, we will press into five key areas of evangelism:

ReThinking Evangelism – Big Idea for Session #1: Understanding evangelism as a natural part of the discipleship journey. The church growth movement and the seeker movement of a previous generation re-energized the church regarding the priority of evangelism with less emphasis on discipleship. The more contemporary conversation around the mission of the church has elevated the priority of discipleship as the main concern of the church with less talk about evangelism. The result has been the creation of a false dichotomy between evangelism and discipleship. We want to re-think evangelism and understand that it is not something that happens before someone is discipled as a Christ follower, but instead it is what happens as a part of the discipleship journey. This first session bridges and continues the conversation started at the Exponential 2013 conference titled, DiscipleShift.

ReThinking Outreach – Big Idea for Session #2: Challenging churches and leaders to do evangelism as a community of believers with our words and deeds. A generation ago the strategy for outreach was through personal evangelism and the training focused primarily on “saving souls” and “sharing” the gospel in word. A significant swing of the pendulum has occurred over the last decade and often St. Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying, “Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary use words” to encourage our deeds to do our talking. However, Assisi never spoke those words and was in fact quite a preacher. We want to re-think outreach and challenge churches to do evangelism as a community of believers through both word and deed.

ReThinking Witness – Big Idea for Session #3: Challenging churches and leaders to teach their people to listen and share their story. In reaction to canned presentations that asked people to approach strangers with two diagnostic questions or four spiritual laws the 21st century church knows that doesn’t work and they want nothing to do with it. Consequently people in today’s church are often mute, with nothing to say about their faith in Christ or love for God. We want to re-think what it means to be a witness. While some of us have the gift of evangelism, all of us are called to be witnesses and to “be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” The church needs to equip people to not share a series of “canned” propositional truths but to listen and to tell their story. When people are equipped to engage in spiritual conversations that includes listening and sharing their story all people can become witnesses for the good news.

ReThinking Preaching – Big Idea for Session #4: Challenging churches and leaders to redeem preaching as good news, not bad news. Preaching in almost every context outside of the church is equated with bad news. No one likes to be “preached at.” No one considers it a compliment if they are told, “You are preaching at me.” There have been times that from the pulpits of the contemporary church or in other public forums we have reinforced that preaching is bad news! But as the church, we know preaching is important to the mission. We also know that preaching is how we declare (not bad news) but the good news of the gospel. We want to re-think preaching and redeem preaching from something that is consider bad news to good news!

ReThinking Commission – As we apprentice people in the ways of Jesus we are making disciples who will make disciples who will make disciples. It is through the multiplication of redemptive believers, communities and churches that we will see a movement of people find their way back to God.

Airport Information

The ideal choice is JOHN WAYNE / SANTA ANA Airport (airport code = SNA). It’s a short drive from SNA to Saddleback Church, and because Disneyland is nearby, it stays fairly competitive in price. It is only 20 miles from the SNA airport to Saddleback Church.

Other options are either LOS ANGELES International Airport (airport code = LAX) or ONTARIO International Airport (airport code = ONT). Both of these airports are further away, though typically cheaper because of the volume of traffic.

LAX is much more traffic intensive, both at the airport and on the freeways to the church. If using LAX, plan on a 1-2 hour commute to Saddleback Church, depending on your arrival time. ONT is less traffic intensive both at the airport and on the freeways. A 1 hour commute time is generally all it should take from ONT to Saddleback Church.
